I wrote two radio spots to promote these Open Houses coming up for the school I work at, and today I got to observe their production.
It was pretty cool...spent the day at a fancy studio and sat in the control room with my boss, the producer she hired, and his sound engineer. Actors recorded my dialogue and then they added in background noise and music and stuff. It really put into perspective how much work is involved in doing these things, and I think it'll help me have a better idea of what I'm doing when I write future spots. I'm just glad I finally got to work on scripts that had more than just one speaker, it's so much easier to be creative when you're dealing with multiple characters.
And incidentally, our sound engineer was the person who did the sound on Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer. It's the only movie that's ever disturbed me long after the fact, and I'm sure part of that had to do with his work creating sound that enhanced the creepy tone. I won't say I like the movie because that's not exactly true, but I will say it was very effective in making you feel exactly the way you are supposed to when viewing something with this subject matter.
