So I stayed home from work yesterday, thanks to a monstrous headache that made me take to my bed until about noon. It was the first time I've slept that much in ages, and it was definitely much needed.

Just as I was gathering my thoughts about what to do for lunch, the phone rang. Didn't recognize the number, but I thought it might be someone from work, so I picked it up and was surprised to hear the voice of R on the other end.

R, for your information, is an old friend from high school. We met through the school newspaper my senior year, when I was a reporter/editor, and he was one of two staff artists. There was never anything remotely romantic between us, but we did go to prom together, and there was a period when we were damn near inseparable because he was close friends with Mike and was also dating a former best friend.

He's dropped in and out of my life ever since, one of those people who you can go years without seeing and then just pick right up as if there's been no lapse of time at all.

Obviously, I had a lot of changes to update him on, so we ended up having an extended conversation, and I suggested we go have a late lunch. We headed to Baker's Square and spent another couple hours catching each other up on our lives.

It was kind of funny, the way we've travelled such widely divergent paths, but still share certain defining commonalities. Like wrestling fandom. And a mutual love for Against Me! There are others, but those are the two that stand out, probably because they are two interests I feel a great deal of passion for.

There's so much more I want to say about this outing, but I'm still kind of processing. I dunno, I guess I just appreciate having people around who instinctively understand who I am and where I come from. Those sorts of connections are kind of rare for me.
