For this one, I've decided to go with a song by a band who has made a career out of creating joyful, happy-making music. I could have chosen any number of single tracks by Queen, because they have so many that have the ability to lift my spirits.

Of all of them though, this is probably my all-time favorite.

Funny thing about this one...even though I've been long familiar with almost the entire Queen catalogue, I didn't hear Don't Stop Me Now for the first time until I saw it used in Shaun of the Dead a few years ago. It was the absolute perfect accessory for the zombie fight scene in the pub, and because of that and because it was so upbeat and catchy I was immediately hooked.

You know how you'll hear or see something that you've never seen before and then suddenly it's all over the place? That's how it was for me and Don't Stop Me Now. At the time I was working at a small private college, it was me as copywriter and my graphic designer partner sharing a big open workspace. We'd get tired of toiling in silence and so he would crank up internet radio on his Mac. There was one station in particular that he really liked, I believe it was Virgin Radio UK and so we'd mostly fill the air with contemporary Brit Pop. But they'd throw some classic stuff into their rotation at points, and it seemed like Don't Stop Me Now was always one of those choices. I loved how it seemed to sneak up on me from nowhere, injecting a bit of adrenaline into my humdrum day and making the job of writing cliched, sales-oriented text much more enjoyable, even if only for a few minutes.

I don't really miss that job all that much, but I do look back fondly on the times we added Queen to our day. Those were the times when it felt like my graphic designer partner and I were really connected. We didn't have a whole lot in common, but we both knew that a good song made all the difference in getting us through the workday.
But I absolutely had to make you all listen to this song with me.

It's beautiful and so is the man singing it and his real name is Sebastian and omigod he just pushes my girl button!!!

Sorry. I've been thinking about heavy stuff all weekend and the outcome of the episode of Being Erica in which this scene appeared made me lose my shit and for just a brief minute I needed to be swoony and thirteen again.

I'll go away and pull myself back together now.

Thanks for listening.
