Ever since I adopted Weevil I've been subjecting you to my frustration over his emo, anti-social ways.
And for the most part, he's still just as emo and anti-social as ever.
But.......but.....tonight he provided me with a tiny sliver of hope that one day I'll have me a normal cat.
It was my turn to host writing group. Steph came over and we did our usual routine of watching Gilmore Girls while eating dinner and dessert.
While this was going on, there was a scared, emo kitty lurking in the darkness under my couch.
In the past he's remained there for the duration of Steph's visit. That's usually the first place he retreats while we're cooking. Why I'm not sure, since he could easily just hang out in my bedroom and be completely undisturbed.
Anyway, he was still under there when we began our word games. By the time we got to the writing he crept out, and I expected that as usual he'd make a beeline for either my bedroom or the litterbox, his default hiding place when he doesn't feel safe under the couch.
I watched.
Waiting for him to break into his trademark kitty trot.
But instead he strolled around the living room, sniffed the carpet a bit, and investigated the empty cloth shopping bag that Steph had set down in front of one of my bookshelves.
He disappeared after that, and Steph and I exchanged a surprised look. I was pleased, but assumed this behavior was an anomaly.
But then..... BUT THEN........he returned a few minutes later! He's been really interested in the area of the baseboard heater right underneath my air conditioner these last few days, and he approached that and sniffed around a bit. I'm not sure what he sees or smells -- whatever it is, it's not perceived by human senses. I'd say he hung around for at least a few minutes until he was satisfied with his investigation, then he prowled around, sat with his front paused tucked beneath him for a quick minute, and even made eye contact with Steph before making his final retreat.
I know this might not seem like much, but if you know Weeve the way that I do you'll understand that this is an incredible breakthrough! I suspect that this behavior is due to the fact that Steph is over more regularly than anyone else, and he's finally accepted and gotten used to her. And maybe he finally understands that she is kind and is a friend to cats, so he no longer feels threatened by her presence. I know he's never been brave enough to emerge for any of my other guests!
I have to take this as a good sign. One that shows he is capable of overcoming his fears.
Anyway, I just wanted to share. And to celebrate!!!!!!!!
