Jun. 4th, 2012

So Friday night I took myself to the Congress Theatre to see one of my favorite bands, Against Me! who was opening for The Cult.

It was my seventh time seeing AM!, and their set was one that I've gotten quite familiar with over the last couple years, save for a few new songs that will appear on their next album. But things still felt fresh and different, because it was my first AM! show since Tom Gabel came out as transgender and changed her name to Laura Jane Grace. Her appearance and voice haven't changed drastically yet, but there were subtle differences, longer hair, certain mannerisms, that were interesting to observe, knowing that they're just the start of a very dramatic transformation.

A lot of the young fans in the crowd left after AM! finished playing, I assume because they had no familiarity with The Cult, which was hilarious but also sad. I stuck around for about half that set (I am not a huge Cult fan, but I know and like a few of their songs), and would have stayed longer except I started experiencing really bad cramps.

I headed out of the building, and was planning on making my way to the train, except that I saw a crowd of people congregating around the corner and realized that Laura was greeting fans and signing autographs. I've never met her before, and I decided that I had to jump on this opportunity.

I waited patiently for my turn, and caught Laura's attention just as the last few fans were starting to leave.

She smiled at me, and thus began my second rock star conversation in the last month.

Me: Hi! Would you mind signing my ticket stub? (shyly extends ticket in her direction)

Laura: Sure! (Takes ticket and pen, and uses parking meter as a writing surface) I'm sorry, this isn't working. Do you have a sharpie?

(I didn't, but two boys standing nearby generously lent me theirs. I handed it off, and Laura commenced with the signing).

Me: This is my seventh Against Me! show. It was really great.

Laura: Really? Thanks for coming out and supporting us.

Me: Yeah, I've been following you since As the Eternal Cowboy.

Laura: (Eyes widen, seemingly impressed.) Wow! Thanks for sticking with us for so long!(Smiles and hands me my signed ticket stub.) Here you go.

Me: No problem. Thank you!

Then the boys who lent me the sharpie asked if I'd mind taking their photo with Laura, and I happily obliged.

End yet another completely unexpected, but totally delightful scene.

I want stuff like this to keep happening all summer!
