I've decided that it's time to break down and stop putting off the purchase of a new camera. My 33mm crapped out a few months ago, and I've been resisting getting a replacement mostly because I'm intimidated by the prospect of having to acclimate myself to digital film and all the technology that comes with it. I know I can pick up on how this stuff works, but I hate the fact that so many digital cameras are all tiny, don't look capable of capturing sizable images, and lend themselves to getting lost or misplaced by scatterbrains such as myself. And I've seen ones that look like real cameras, but I don't know if I need one with all the bells and whistles they include.

Any suggestions? I'll willing to drop up to $300, and am primarily looking for something that would be good for vacations and everyday pics and such, but could also produce good images in the event that I ever have to shoot stuff to go along with article assignments.

My suggestion is as follows:
http://www.dpreview.com/

This is THE site for digital photography hardware reviews (ie cameras). The reviews are both easy to navigate and quickly identify possible purchases, as well as unbelievably in-depth.

Plus their buying guide will help you narrow down quickly the particular cameras which fall into your requirements. I LOVE this site!

I love the Canon PowerShot line; they have a wide variety of prices and features to choose from. And I second the poet re: dpreview.com--great resource.
