Secrets of the soul...

After resisting and resisting and resisting some more, I've finally broken down and jumped on the bandwagon. That's right, folks, I am reading Stephanie Meyer's Twilight.
I tend to avoid books such as these, not because I'm an anti-bestseller snob, but because I'm fearful that these stories will never live up to the hype and praise I've heard, whether from the media, or the overly rabid fan base. And really, who wants to invest time and energy in a story, only to wind up disappointed?
But I made an exception in this case, one, because I love vampire novels, two, I love teenage melodrama even more, and three, because a co-worker lent me his copy, sparing me from having to buy it myself. It's not the most phenomenal thing I've ever read, not by a long shot, and I could go on for days about the wrong-headed messages it sends to girls about romance (I mean, seriously, is it ever okay to be hopelessly smitten over a guy that you're even slightly afraid of, a guy with the power to kill you?) but there's also something about it that conjures my inner twelve-year-old. Once she takes over, it's pretty easy to see the appeal of this novel - a piece of literary junk food, really, with its cheesy dialogue, constant sexual tension, and endless descriptions of Edward's impossible beauty.
I'll wait until I finish to render a final verdict, but for now, I'll say that Twilight, if nothing else, makes my commute more amusing.

Sigh. As much I don't want to line the pockets of this lady, I'm probably going to buy them all. Addicted!
