Yesterday I spent my lunch hour at Millennium Park, listening to the joyful music of one of my favorite bands, Kaiser Cartel.

The show was held in a big tent constructed for some sort of family fun festival, so naturally there were all kinds of little kids running around.

There was one girl in particular that really caught my attention. She had light brown hair and was dressed in pink (including a cute tiered skirt) from head to toe. Throughout the first half of Kaiser Cartel's set (they played for half an hour, took a break, and then played for another fifteen minutes or so) she remained planted near the front of the stage, listening intently to the music. She rested her tiny fist on her left hip, and shifted it back and forth in time to the beat, not dramatically, but with just enough movement so you could tell that she was dancing.

Something about the way she moved was just soooooo freaking precious. Maybe it was the fact that she was so un-self-conscious? And so clearly entranced by what she heard?

I dunno. I guess I envy the ability to get that caught up in something. I wish that life as a grown-up was as simple as losing myself in pretty sounding music and shaking my hips as if nothing else mattered.

ETA: I keep thinking about this little girl and I've decided that what I really appreciated about her hip-shaking was how serious she was while she was doing it. As if it was her personal mandate for the duration of Kaiser Cartel's performance. That's how focused she was. From where I stood, it looked like she had laid claim to a role as designated dancer, and woe be to the person who tried to take that from her.
