Dec. 10th, 2008

I woke up this morning feeling not entirely better, but (I thought) well enough to force myself back into the land of the living. Unfortunately, I only made it through a half-day of work before a violent coughing fit had me ready to crawl back to the comfort and security of my little pink-walled home. Kind of frustrating, but I guess it's better to know my limits, and to not exceed them too much if I can help it. Hell, I should be grateful I have a boss who encourages me to take ample time to beat this illness rather than one who forces me back to full speed before I'm ready.

Haven't got much else to report, seeing as how I've been doing nothing but sleep with occasional breaks to read. I'm almost half-way through the new Bret Hart autobiography, and its made me nostalgic for all things WWE. I even forced Mike to sit through the special three-hour edition of RAW Monday night, and was pleased (but also a little disturbed) to find that their cast of characters, save for a couple new additions, is almost EXACTLY the same as it was the last time I watched the show regularly...back in late 2005, early 2006 (I gave up on the product when DGeneration X reformed, and the show became nothing but HHH and Shawn Michaels running around, finding ways to douse Vince McMahon in excrement or other bodily fluids). It was kind of nice to see that I could hook right back in to their programming if I wanted to, (kind of like a soap opera, where all you need if you've been away is an episode or two and you're back up to speed), and I enjoyed seeing guys like Chris Jericho and Jeff Hardy still doing their thing, but it also made me miss the period when wresting really captivated me, that whole late-nineties, early 2000s era, when it was all about storylines that went somewhere and built to a satisfying climax.

One of my favorite WWE moments (not counting Hulk/Andre at Wrestlemania III, and actually getting to view Wrestlemania IV live from my living room) is from that era. It came to mind this morning, and is viewable below if you're interested. The only thing you need to know before watching is that leading up to this, the WWE kept running these ominous teasers featuring three creepy girls, hinting that The Undertaker was making his return after a long period of being off TV. I'd suggest skipping ahead to about 1:27 in the video, because that's when things really get exciting.

I remember how much I anticipated seeing this, how cool it was to see Taker in his biker gimmick for the first time. He stalked into the ring, leather duster flying, and for one brief, perfect moment in time, made me forget myself, made me forget everything but him kicking the ass of everyone in his path.

I don't think I've seen anything comparable since, even at indie shows, where I've had more than my share of mark-out moments. Not sure if that means I'm harder to impress than I used to be, or if that's really as good as it's gonna get. Either way, I doubt I'll be counting on Vince and crew to change my mind, just to avoid future disappointment.
