You know you're having a bad period when you're listening to Don McLean's American Pie on the radio on the way to work, and inexplicably burst into tears.

Yeah, I need help.

I had a day of depression where The Four Tops' "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" ran through my head, and made me feel like hell.

Whoa, child. American Pie? That's serious.

Though I must say, as a full-throated male, that it now takes very little for me to tear up when listening to certain songs. I'm thinking of a Nina Simone song called "Another Spring"--man, I about lose it every time.

And the ending of the movie of The Color Purple. I know, I know--shameless, manipulative as hell--but what a long way we've come with them by the end.

I blame hormones for the American Pie fiasco, but there are other songs that get me whether or not I'm suffering from PMS (sorry if that's TMI). In fact, I've been noticing that lately music in general has had a greater influence over my moods than it has since I was in high school. Hope that doesn't mean I'm about to regress into a second angsty, melodramatic phase.

Off the top of my head I can't comment on the nina simone song, but yeah, the color purple is a killer. I haven't watched that movie in years because the emotional effects of it are so debilitating.
