God, you make me feel old, child.

How did you do this? What's the link/URL? I went to a site called Pop Culture Madness but couldn't figure out the next step.

Just figured it out, I think--never mind.

Since I don't use my own LJ space, I'll just briefly comment on a few. The year in question, by the way, is '86.

1. That's What Friends Are For - Dionne & Friends--I sympathize with the impetus, but gaw, it's sappy.
5. Living In America - James Brown--We knew you when, JB.
10. You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi--The funnest of their trash.
11. Higher Love - Steve Winwood--Could live the rest of my life without hearing it again.
13. Greatest Love Of All - Whitney Houston--I knew she sang treacle, even before The Bodyguard.
15. Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel--Do I still like this more for the video than the song? No, I don't think so.
21. Word Up - Cameo--Yeah, baby!
26. Dancing On The Ceiling - Lionel Richie--When I felt cynical (often), I referred to this as "Hanging from the Ceiling."
30. Rock Me Amadeus - Falco--A friend of mine actually bought Falco 3. Bought!
31. I Can't Wait - Nu Shooz--Holds up well.
34. Crush On You - The Jets--Anything by the Jets or by Debarge can kiss my ass.
38. R.O.C.K. In The USA - John "Cougar" Melloncamp--From 50s nostalgia to singin' for Ford. OK, I still like this. Had Scarecrow like the rest of 'em.
42. I'm Your Man - Wham!--Yeah! My one favorite Wham! song. I wanna do this at karaoke sometime.
48. Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung--Never knew "wang chung" was a verb until this one.
63. Sex As A Weapon - Pat Benatar--Big mistake, Pat; you were a fine, gutsy rocker until you got serious.
64. Superbowl Shuffle - Chicago Bears--Bring back the Fridge!!

God, pop music was dismal. Still is, overall.

I didn't mean to make you feel old. But you actually made me jealous, because you would have been old enough to appreciate the early 90's stuff when it was just breaking through, unlike me who didn't discover it until after Cobain died. As for your selections...I have some comments on them as well.

1. I remember my class (probably fourth grade) had to sing this as a group for some sort of performance that we invited parents to. We stood in a large mass, slung arms around each other's shoulders, and swayed back and forth. I'm sure it was horribly off-key.
5. Makes me think of the Rocky movie with the evil russian. Then again, Rocky has been on the brain lately.
10. This will always be a karaoke classic.
15. I remember liking the video because I knew there was something dirty about it but didn't quite comprehend the innuendo.
34. Shameful admission: I created a dance sequence to this in my backyard with some other girls. Lots of pantomime and pointing for the "on you" line.
38. There was a copy of Scarecrow around my house when this came out. It got heavy rotation on our stereo, and I remember sitting on the couch with the liner notes following the lyrics as the songs played.
42. I might hold you to your karaoke desire if we can find some while AWP is happening.
63. I like Benatar, but I don't think I remember this one.

Like Michael, I couldn't figure it out, either.
Unlike Michael, I still haven't been able to figure it out.

If anyone cares to help an old fart figure out how to get to the right place to do this, it would be most appreciated

I'll try to explain. Go to popculturemadness.com, and hover your mouse over the link called Pop Music. A string of decades will appear on the line below the link, and you need to click on the one in which the date you turned 18 falls. This will take you to a new page where on the left side, you'll see links to the hits for each year. Click your year, and voila, you'll have your list. Let me know how this turns out, I'd love to see your results! Always so interesting to learn people's taste in music.

1996 I was really into alternative rock and punk rock and R&B and dance, I loved listening to late nights on a Connecciccut (sp) radio station that did interviews with famous rock stars. The host, Tom Calderone, now is the president of VH1.

I'll just pick my favorites. I turned 18 in 2001:

Lady Marmalade - Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim, and Mya
Get The Party Started - Pink
Bootylicious - Destiny's Child
Pop - N Sync
Fallin' - Alicia Keys

I felt too old by that time and didn't like a lot of pop songs from that year.

Pink is the best! And I just realized that you were turning 18 the year I got my bachelor's degree.
